The X-Files was one of all-time favorite TV shows, and in my life I have encountered many accepted truths that didn’t make sense. Is there really a God? Who killed JFK? Are UFOs really visitors from outer space? Those are some of the big ones. But there are others, some that have become part of history, some perpetrated in the present day by people who want to conceal the truth so they can take advantage of us. In the end, however, there is a truth, and it’s out there.
Many of our problems are caused by dishonesty in the service of profit, of selfish interests over compassion, of all for me and none for all.

Big Lies, and Little White Lies:
How They Distort the Reality of Our Existence
Imagine being in a world where everyone told the truth, or even where most people told the truth most of the time. I used to think that was the way it was. But after years of being told lie after lie after lie . . . I am sorry to say it’s not that way at all. I knew the cherry tree was a myth but I had believed in its lesson.
Now I’m not so sure. Maybe what we believe about our very existence has always been a lie. We don’t like the truth because it can be painful. It feels better to live the lie.
Look what happened to Socrates, the classic truth teller – he was forced to go into exile or drink poison hemlock unless he stopped speaking out. Then we have Galileo who declared the earth revolved around the sun but was forced to recant or consider being burned at the stake like Giordano Bruno, who refused. In recent history we have the whistleblowers: Daniel Ellsberg, Edward Snowden and Julian Assange. Ellsberg was found innocent, Snowden escaped, and Assange was tortured in prison for many years before his recent release. There have been many others who have told the truth and had to face the consequences
I remember when I was young, I naively wanted to become a writer so I could tell the truth.
As a child, I could see through the BS. Really now, the Holy Ghost conceived the baby Jesus yet Mary remained a virgin, or the Pope is infallible? Whatever your religion, suspend your belief for a moment. Don’t you think it’s preposterous that of all the religions that exist or have existed, yours is the only one true faith? If it is, then all the others are liars.
One of our culture’s greatest myths was the wonderful legend of Santa Claus. We were enthralled with that lie from the time we could gurgle and burp. Wouldn’t it be nice if there really was a Santa Claus who could forever come to our house one night of the year and bring us everlasting happiness?
We’ve been conditioned to believe these lies; it's easier that way.
For me, the lie that had the most influence on my life was that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin of President John F. Kennedy. I was in high school chemistry class, and our teacher, Dr. Rowe, rose up from his wheelchair on crutches and led us in prayer when we first heard the news. We didn’t know how serious it was then. Looking back, we know now that he already was gone when we got that message so our prayers were useless but the lie that it could help gave us comfort.
It wasn’t until 10 years later I learned that he was shot from the front—and now 61 years later the lie continues, and they call the truthtellers, conspiracy theorists.
The Headshot that killed JFK
Sure, there are a lot of crazy conspiracies based on wild speculation. But there is more evidence that JFK was killed by a cabal of our government than any other event in our history. Kennedy wanted to end the Cold War, get out of Vietnam, restructure the CIA (he already fired Dulles), cut ties with LBJ, and retire J. Edgar Hoover, and that was the truth.[1] And 9-11 is no less significant, or its official explanation less of a lie.[2]
Most recently the most prolific liar in our public history, the man who doesn’t know how to tell the truth, Donald J. Trump, was our President.[3] Not to say our other Presidents weren’t liars, for of course there was Pearl Harbor, the wars in Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East;[4] covering up coups in Iran, Guatemala, Cuba, Chile, Nicaragua, Indonesia, the Congo, Venezuela, the list goes on and on. We supported dictators, committed genocide, either caused, were complicit, or funded the deaths of millions of innocent people, and the beat goes on.[5]
Regarding Pearl Harbor, our government intercepted messages that the Japanese were preparing an attack, 24 hours ahead of time, yet delayed the warning which would’ve enabled our fleet to evacuate before it happened.[6]
It was the pretext needed to get us into the war and the devastation created by the attack created the necessary national outrage to support it. Secretly, on a warship in the Atlantic Ocean, Roosevelt had met Churchill, who had pleaded for U.S. entrance to prevent the Nazis from conquering England. It always has been a web of lies and secrets for those who hold power, and if innocent lives need to be sacrificed, so be it.
That’s what the “covert” wing of the CIA does. Lying is their stock in trade: Disinformation. They masterminded the assassinations of JFK and his brother, were complicit in the assassination of Martin Luther King, and along with the FBI set up the disinformation to divert us from the truth.[7] Like the ruse that the Chinese were involved in hacking our election machines during the 2020 Presidential elections,[8] that the Russians caused the defeat of Hillary Clinton in 2016[9] —a diversion from the real truth that Hillary and her machine had actually cheated Bernie Sanders[10] —our nation’s intelligence agencies have manipulated the facts to fit our government’s agenda, like the fable about WMDs in Iraq. And if you don’t believe me, look it up yourself. The truth is out there.
They didn’t tell us the truth about Agent Orange in Vietnam, about the “rescue” of Jessica Lynch in Iraq, or the assassination of Pat Tillman in Afghanistan.[11] Or the classified video of those cold-blooded murders by U.S. helicopter pilots of civilians in the streets of Baghdad provided by whistleblower Chelsea Manning to Wikileaks among some 400,000 sensitive Pentagon documents.[12] Manning later was convicted of violating the Espionage Act and spent seven years in prison before receiving a pardon from President Obama.
The first two pictures show individuals some journalists being shot upon with barbaric ferocity. The third is of a van picking up one of those who had been shot and which the pilots blasted into pieces. It was later discovered that there were two children in the van, who were injured but miraculously survived and rescued by American soldiers.
The Savage Murder of Reuters Reporters and Iraqi Civilians
Most of us know, or should know, that the oil companies have been lying to us for decades about the cause of Global Warming[13] and yet many still believe their hocus pocus that the world will soon shift into an ice age because of the cooling sun. But just look at the graph below from 2020 taken from NASA’s website, which shows the precipitous increase in global temperatures since 1980 in comparison with the decline of solar activity. It debunks those claims that increased solar radiance is causing the warming and not human activity.
That was four years ago, and we all know just from watching the Weather Channel with its increasing reports of weather disasters that things are getting worse. Go to this link, Sixth Assessment Report,” IPCC, 2023, for the most recent assessment from the world’s experts on Global Climate Change. It’s actually happening faster now than they had predicted. And Al Gore who had warned us about it and was demonized as a fool by the purveyors of lies is having the last laugh now.
Lies, secrets, and deceptions. They’re everywhere. They’ve permeated our existence, our political structure, and are part and parcel of our economic system. Because we’re starting to recognize this, our distrust has grown and some are having trouble, for example, accepting the need of the COVID vaccine, that it might be some kind of plot to control us. But the stats show that it has saved lives, even if it hasn’t been perfect.
The same could be said of the extreme weather, the soaring temperatures, the melting icebergs and rising sea levels. We take comfort in the lie that they are just an anomaly and will go away.[14] But as I write this and Hurricane Milton approaches Tampa Bay, ask the people there if they still believe Trump that it’s all a hoax.
Truth is like Flannery O’Connor’s Good Man—very hard to find.
Heck, most of us still have trouble believing once we leave this mortal shell that we will be gone, gone, gone, forevermore. And that, my friends, is the unfortunate truth we all have to face.
[1] There are hundreds of books that expose the lies of The Warren Report, 1964, which still remains as the official government explanation. Among my favorites are James Douglass, JFK and the Unspeakable, 2009; Fletcher Prouty, JFK: Vietnam, The CIA and the Plot to Assassinate John F. Kennedy, 2003; David Lifton, The Best Evidence, 1981; Josiah Thompson, Six Seconds in Dallas, 1967; Carl Oglesby, Yankee-Cowboy War, 1976; and Douglas Horne, Inside the Assassination Review Board, 2009. The 1978 Report of the House Assassinations Committee and David Scheim’s Contract on America, 1988 are a wealth of information on Jack Ruby; Joachim Joesten, Oswald: The Truth, 1967, and Edward Epstein, Legend, 1978, are good sources on Oswald; and Mark Lane’s Rush to Judgment, 1966, and Harold Weisberg’s Whitewash, 1965, are landmark works. There are many good documentaries, as well, including the BBC series by Nigel Kennedy, The Men Who Killed Kennedy, 1988, which is among the best.
